Key takeaways

  1. 01 Eastern astrology signs run in a 12-year cycle that starts with the Rat and finishes with the Pig.
  2. 02 Your animal follows the lunar year, so a January or early February birthday may belong to the previous year's animal.
  3. 03 Each animal also carries one of five elements, which is why two Tigers born years apart can read differently.
  4. 04 Animals are grouped in friendly trines such as Rat, Dragon and Monkey, a favorite starting point for compatibility chats.
  5. 05 The free 9-question quiz for the Eastern Astrology Language Reading is one easy way to go from your sign to a personalized reading.

Ever been asked “what’s your sign?” and wished you had a better answer than your birth month? Eastern astrology signs give you one. Twelve animals, each with a distinct personality sketch, have shaped birthday conversations, family gatherings and New Year traditions for centuries. Below you will find all 12, the years that belong to each, and a simple way to check which one is really yours. Then we show how the Eastern Astrology Language Reading turns your sign into a full chart.

Heads up: this is our own independent write-up and the seller has no hand in it. The quiz buttons carry affiliate tracking, so we may be paid a small commission if you decide to order.

The 12 animals in order, with one traditional keyword each.

The first four: Rat, Ox, Tiger and Rabbit

Rat. The cycle starts here. Rats are traditionally described as quick-witted, resourceful and charming, the people who spot an opportunity before anyone else does. The flip side in the folklore is a tendency to overthink.

Ox. Steady, patient and dependable. Oxen are the ones who finish what they start, and tradition pictures them as calm under pressure and loyal to their people. They can be stubborn once they have made up their mind.

Tiger. Bold, magnetic and competitive. Tigers are said to walk into a room and change the energy, and they are drawn to challenges. The traditional caution is that all that courage can tip into impatience.

Rabbit. Gentle, graceful and kind. Rabbits are described as peacemakers with a good eye for beauty and a strong wish for a calm home. They may avoid conflict a little too long.

The middle four: Dragon, Snake, Horse and Goat

Dragon. The only mythical creature on the list, and the one most associated with confidence and ambition. Dragons are pictured as generous, energetic and larger than life, which is why the Dragon is often seen as an especially auspicious sign.

Snake. Thoughtful, private and wise. Snakes are traditionally described as deep thinkers who prefer to watch, plan and then act with precision. Their mystery is part of their charm.

Horse. Free-spirited, sociable and full of energy. Horses are said to love movement, travel and open spaces, and they thrive when they have room to run. Their independence can look like restlessness.

Goat. Creative, warm and gentle, sometimes called Sheep or Ram in other translations. Goats are described as artistic and caring, happiest in a peaceful, supportive setting.

The last four: Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig

Monkey. Clever, curious and playful. Monkeys are the problem solvers of the zodiac, quick to learn and quick to laugh. Tradition warns that restless minds sometimes skip the follow-through.

Rooster. Observant, organized and proud of a job well done. Roosters are described as honest, hard-working and fond of routine, with an eye for detail that others miss.

Dog. Loyal, honest and protective. Dogs are the friends who show up, and they value fairness above almost everything. They can worry more than the situation calls for.

Pig. Generous, easygoing and sincere. Pigs are described as people who enjoy good food, good company and the good things in life, and who give freely to those they love.

How to find your animal: the Lunar New Year cut-off

Here is the part that trips people up. The animal year does not begin on January 1. It begins at Lunar New Year, which falls somewhere between late January and mid February. So if your birthday sits early in the calendar year, your animal may belong to the year before.

YearLunar New Year dateAnimal that begins
2023January 22Rabbit
2024February 10Dragon
2025January 29Snake
2026February 17Horse

Five steps to your animal.

Two quick examples. Someone born on February 1, 2024 is still a Rabbit, because Dragon season had not started yet. Someone born on January 15, 2025 is a Dragon for the same reason, since the Snake year began on January 29.

Not sure? Look up the Lunar New Year date for your birth year and compare it with your birthday. Born before it, take the previous year’s animal. Born on or after it, take that year’s animal.

Beyond the animal: elements and trines

Your sign is the headline, not the full story. In the Eastern tradition each year also carries one of five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water. Multiply twelve animals by five elements and you get a cycle of 60 years, so a Wood Tiger and a Fire Tiger are both Tigers with a different flavor. Think of the animal as the character and the element as the costume it is wearing.

Groupings add another layer. The trines in the table above link animals traditionally seen as natural allies, such as Rat, Dragon and Monkey. People like trines because they turn “what’s your sign?” into “who do I click with?”, a fun way to start a conversation at a family dinner.

From your sign to a personal reading

Reading about an animal is a lovely start. If you would like to see a zodiac animal, an element and a birthday woven into one personalized write-up, the brand Your Astrology Language sells the Eastern Astrology Language Reading for exactly that. The seller describes it as drawing on BaZi “four pillars” ideas and on symbolic stars, and it opens with a free quiz instead of a sales page.

You type in your name, an email address and your birthday, answer a few multiple-choice questions, and a free preview appears on screen. After that you pick whether to continue. Two options sit on the seller’s order page:

OptionPriceSeller’s description
Essential Reading$19A full 50+ page Eastern Destiny Chart sent to your inbox within 48 to 72 hours

Try it with a 60-day safety net

The nicest thing about a digital reading you buy for fun is how relaxed the decision can be. Your order goes through ClickBank, and ClickBank backs it with a 60-day money-back guarantee. Read the chart, pass it around the family, hold it up against how you see yourself, and if it just is not your thing, request a refund. Keep the receipt. For help, write to [email protected] or call ClickBank order support on 1-800-390-6035.

Small tip: the email checkbox on the quiz comes pre-ticked. Clear it if all you want is your reading.

Who will enjoy this

  • Curious beginners who have just learned they are a Goat or a Snake and want to know more.
  • Families and friends who like comparing signs at celebrations.
  • Gift givers who want something personal, since a sign-based reading starts from a single date of birth.
  • Anyone who enjoys a reflective prompt, a reason to think about how they work, what they value and where they want to put their energy.

Frequently asked questions

How many signs are there in the Chinese zodiac?

Twelve animals take turns in a repeating 12-year cycle, starting with the Rat and ending with the Pig. Pair them with the five elements and the complete pattern comes around every 60 years.

Which animal am I if I was born in January or February?

Check the date of Lunar New Year in your birth year. If you were born before it, you belong to the previous year's animal. If you were born on or after it, you belong to that year's animal.

Is the Goat the same as the Sheep or the Ram?

Yes. The eighth animal is called Goat, Sheep or Ram depending on the region and the translation. The traits described are the same.

Can I be more than one animal?

Your birth year gives your main animal. In the BaZi tradition, your birth month, day and hour carry their own animals too, which is how a fuller chart adds depth beyond the headline sign.

How do I get a reading based on my sign?

The Eastern Astrology Language Reading starts with a free nine-question quiz. It asks for a name, an email address and a birthday, shows a preview, and then offers the full chart. If you only want your reading, clear the pre-ticked email checkbox.

What if the full reading is not for me?

ClickBank backs the purchase with a 60-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it and request a refund within that window.

Is this meant to be taken as science?

No. Eastern astrology is a cultural tradition that many people enjoy for reflection, conversation and fun. Treat the traits as a starting point for thinking about yourself, not a forecast.
