Key takeaways
- 01 You can find your animal with simple arithmetic: subtract 4 from your birth year, divide by 12 and read the remainder.
- 02 The last digit of the year gives the element and yin or yang, as long as you use the right year for your birthday.
- 03 Two cut-offs matter: Lunar New Year for the zodiac animal, and Start of Spring near February 4 for the BaZi year pillar.
- 04 A calculator hands you codes. A written reading explains what they mean in plain language.
- 05 The seller's free quiz is a quiz that collects your details and shows its offer. It is not a free calculator, and we do not offer one.
Searching for an Eastern astrology birth chart calculator usually means one of two things: you want your zodiac animal and element quickly, or you want a full set of BaZi pillars. The good news is that the first part is easy to do with a pen and your birth year, no website needed. This guide shows you how, explains the two calendar cut-offs that catch people out, and compares what a calculator gives you with what a written reading such as the Eastern Astrology Language Reading adds.

What an Eastern astrology birth chart calculator does
A calculator takes your date of birth, usually plus your birth time, and converts it into the pieces of an Eastern chart: your animal, your element, whether your year is yin or yang, and in a BaZi calculator, your four pillars. It is a lookup, and a fast one. What it rarely does is tell you what any of it means for you.
That distinction is the thread running through this page. Doing the basics yourself is satisfying and free. Understanding them, in words you can use, is where a written reading comes in.
Step 1: find your animal with simple arithmetic
Take your birth year, subtract 4 and divide by 12. The remainder points to your animal.
| Remainder | Animal | Remainder | Animal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Rat | 6 | Horse |
| 1 | Ox | 7 | Goat |
| 2 | Tiger | 8 | Monkey |
| 3 | Rabbit | 9 | Rooster |
| 4 | Dragon | 10 | Dog |
| 5 | Snake | 11 | Pig |
Example: 1992 minus 4 is 1988. Divide by 12 and you get 165 with a remainder of 8, so the animal is the Monkey.
Step 2: check the Lunar New Year cut-off
The animal year begins at Lunar New Year, not on January 1. If your birthday falls before that date, subtract one from your birth year before you do the sum above. Lunar New Year lands between late January and mid February, so it matters for any birthday early in the year.
Recent dates: January 22, 2023, February 10, 2024, January 29, 2025 and February 17, 2026. A baby born on January 20, 2025 therefore counts as a Dragon (2024), while one born on January 30, 2025 is a Snake. For the full list of animals and traits, see our guide to the 12 animal signs.
Step 3: read the element from the last digit
The element comes from the final digit of the year, using the same corrected year from step 2.
| Last digit | Element | Polarity |
|---|---|---|
| 0 or 1 | Metal | 0 yang, 1 yin |
| 2 or 3 | Water | 2 yang, 3 yin |
| 4 or 5 | Wood | 4 yang, 5 yin |
| 6 or 7 | Fire | 6 yang, 7 yin |
| 8 or 9 | Earth | 8 yang, 9 yin |
Back to 1992: the last digit is 2, so the element is Water and the year is yang. You are a Water Monkey. Not bad for thirty seconds of arithmetic.
Step 4: know the second cut-off, Start of Spring
Here is the catch. BaZi does not use Lunar New Year. Its year pillar changes at the solar term “Start of Spring”, around February 4, and its months follow other solar terms through the year. So a birthday between February 4 and Lunar New Year can have two answers.
Take February 10, 2026. Lunar New Year that year is February 17, so the zodiac animal is still the Snake. But the BaZi year pillar has already moved on to the Horse. Neither answer is wrong. They follow two different calendars. If you are after a BaZi chart, use Start of Spring. If you are after the familiar animal sign, use Lunar New Year.
Three worked examples
Here is the method applied to three birthdays, including the awkward early-year ones.
| Birthday | Zodiac animal (Lunar New Year rule) | Element and polarity | BaZi year pillar (Start of Spring rule) |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 10, 1992 | Monkey | Water, yang | Water Monkey, same as the animal year |
| January 20, 2025 | Dragon, because the Snake year began January 29 | Wood, yang | Wood Dragon, because Start of Spring had not arrived |
| February 10, 2026 | Snake, because the Horse year begins February 17 | Wood, yin | Fire Horse, because Start of Spring has passed |
The third row is the one to remember. Same person, same birthday, two calendars, two answers.
Where DIY stops
The month, day and hour pillars take more than arithmetic. Months follow solar terms, days run through a 60-day cycle that is normally read from a table, and the hour needs your birth time. Our post on the BaZi birth chart lays out the hour periods and what each pillar represents. Software handles all of this in a blink, which is exactly what a calculator is good at.
Calculator or written reading: what you get
| Calculator | Written reading | |
|---|---|---|
| What it gives you | Animal, element and pillar codes | Those pieces explained in words |
| Best for | Fast lookups and checking your work | Understanding and reflecting |
| Format | On screen | A document delivered by email |
| Birth hour | Needed for the hour pillar | Depends on the reading |
Neither replaces the other. Many people use a lookup to check their sign and then read a written chart to enjoy the story.
About the seller’s free quiz
Let us be plain about it: the quiz for the Eastern Astrology Language Reading is not a free calculator. It is a quiz. Over nine short questions and roughly a minute, it collects your name, email address and birthday, then shows a free preview reading followed by the seller’s offer of a full chart. We do not provide a calculator on this site, and we have no tool of our own for working out your pillars.
What the quiz does give you is a friendly doorway into the personalized Eastern Astrology Language Reading from the brand Your Astrology Language, which mixes animal and element, four-pillar thinking and symbolic stars with names like Wealth, Peach Blossom and Nobleman. It wants a birthday, and it never asks for a birth time.
| Package | Cost | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Essential Reading | $19 | The 50+ page chart on its own, sent by email in two to three days |
| VIP Reading | $47 (versus $97 on the seller’s page) | Everything in Essential, three extras, personal lucky colors, express email service and priority support |
A low-pressure way to try it

Quoted prices are in US dollars, local currency and tax may appear at checkout, and the charge shows up as CLKBANK on your statement.
A tip for the quiz: the newsletter checkbox comes already ticked. Remove the tick if you only want the reading.

Frequently asked questions
Can I work out my Chinese zodiac animal by hand?
Yes. Subtract 4 from your birth year, divide by 12 and look at the remainder: 0 is Rat, 1 is Ox, 2 is Tiger, 3 is Rabbit, 4 is Dragon, 5 is Snake, 6 is Horse, 7 is Goat, 8 is Monkey, 9 is Rooster, 10 is Dog and 11 is Pig. Use the previous year if you were born before Lunar New Year.
How do I find my element from my birth year?
Look at the last digit. Years ending in 0 or 1 are Metal, 2 or 3 are Water, 4 or 5 are Wood, 6 or 7 are Fire and 8 or 9 are Earth. An even digit is yang and an odd digit is yin.
What does a BaZi calculator need from me?
Your date of birth, your birth time and ideally your birthplace, so it can place you in the right solar-term month and two-hour period. Day and hour pillars rely on lookup tables that software handles easily.
Is the Eastern Astrology Language Reading quiz a free calculator?
No. It is a free nine-question quiz that gathers a name, email address and birthday, shows a preview reading and then presents the seller's offer. We do not provide a calculator on this site.
What does a written reading give me that a calculator does not?
Explanation. A calculator lists your pillars. A written reading puts them into words, covering your animal, element and symbolic stars in a document you can reread and share.
How much does the full reading cost?
Essential is $19 and VIP is $47, against a $97 regular price the seller lists. Local currency and tax may be added at checkout.
Is there a refund if I do not like the reading?
Yes. ClickBank allows refund requests for 60 days after you buy.
